John S. Lyons - Over 35 years experience managing investment portfolios
Mr. Lyons began his career in 1969 with a well-known Wall Street brokerage firm
and during his initial five years in the business, two bear markets caused his
clients and himself considerable anxiety. He became disenchanted with the lack of
investing guidance he received from his employer and, as a result, he embarked
on a campaign to educate himself on the dynamics and psychology of the markets.
He realized that to simply "buy-and-hold" meant that a portfolio would eventually
suffer damaging losses. His goal, therefore, was to identify methods of protecting
his clients' investments from such losses and yet still be able to provide the returns
that are available over time through equity investing.
Thus, in the mid to late 1970's, Mr. Lyons became a pioneer in the area of active
management, working to develop methodologies for determining when market risk
was appropriate for investing and when it was too great to be invested. The result
was a multi-factor risk-assessing model that he began to utilize in March of 1978
and that, with minor adjusting, is still in use today. Its continued relevance is due to
the fact that all of its input is derived from the stock market itself.
John Lyons is a graduate of Duke University.
